THE FRESH START MARKET STORY
Shawn Singer, a native of Nicholas County, opened Fresh Start Market in May of 2019. After going through a big life change, she was ready for a “fresh start.” She had always loved visiting large markets in other towns that sold flowers, fresh produce, and all kinds of local goods. When the chance came to open something like that in Summersville, she decided to take a leap of faith and went for it.
Just as she was getting in the swing of things, COVID hit. Like so many small businesses, Fresh Start Market had to adapt quickly. They switched to curbside pickup and even made some deliveries to keep fresh produce flowing to their customers. This challenging time created strong connections with the community, building trust and loyalty that became the foundation for their market.
As those relationships grew, so did what the market had to offer. Fresh Start began to partner with other local farmers and producers, expanding beyond just flowers and produce to include eggs, meats, and other locally-made products. Over time, it has evolved into a welcoming local market where everyone feels at home. Shawn captures this community spirit perfectly: “I love to talk to all of my customers when they walk in. We talk about gardening, recipes, or anything random. I love to get to know my customers, and that’s helped make Fresh Start Market what it is.”
Fresh Start Market is not just a place to shop but a gathering space for the community, known for its special events, support for local farmers, and commitment to keeping local connections strong. Being part of the community is a big part of why this market exists, and they’re excited to keep growing alongside the farmers, producers, and customers they love.
WHAT OUR SHOPPERS ARE SAYING
• “Had a beautiful experience, we stopped to get a few flowers and pumpkins to spruce up the yard and found so much more. The owner was kind, knowledgeable and helpful with carrying out to the car. Answered all of my questions with a cheerful attitude and her store carried so much other items from local vendors. You can tell she takes pride in owning and operating in summersville, but loves to support others who do so. Here's a few lovely and affordable items available for sale if we didn't take the last ones. Will have many happy returns, so glad this business is so close to home. Other items not pictured, are local produce including great pumpkins, stickers, seeds and so much more.” - Dawn Morrow
